Plymouth Barracuda Formula S
Specifications
The Plymouth Barracuda, an answer to the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Corvair Monza. The people who at the time called themselves the “shotcallers” at Plymouth wanted to call this car the Panda. An idea that didn’t sit well with the designers. Fortunately, they quickly came up with the current name (a bit tougher); the Barracuda.
The first generation Barracuda was produced from 1964 to 1966. A technical feat; the design led Plymouth to partner with Pittsburgh Plate Glass. This was to realize the large curved rear window. At the time, the largest rear window produced for a production car.
The Barracuda was equipped with three different engines. The 2.8, 3.7 and the 4.5 liter. Ours is doing everything it can to get rid of its “pony-car” title, as it has been given the largest possible power source. The Formula S, the 273 cubic inches big V8 with dual carburetor has 235 horsepower and clearly makes its presence felt.
Besides its performance and beautiful design, this Barracuda is also much more unique than a Mustang. During the production of the Barracuda mk1 (’64-’66), 126,538 Mustangs were made, where only 23,443 Barracudas rolled off the assembly line (of which even fewer V8s).
In 1966, the Barracuda received a facelift, making our model the most sought after model year of the Barracuda. The V logo made way for the Barracuda fish on the tailgate, and bumpers and taillights better matched the whole. This Barracuda was recently completely nut and bolt restored and completely rebuilt with original and high quality materials. With its new condition, color scheme and history, this is a true Cool Classic!
